Do you need a referral for a chest X-ray?

A referral is a request from a doctor or another authorised clinician for imaging. It usually explains the clinical question, such as checking the lungs after a cough, assessing an injury, or reviewing a known condition. The radiology team uses this information to select and report the appropriate views. Some imaging centres accept direct bookings for selected patients, while others require a referral before they schedule the examination.

Start with the clinic or hospital where you plan to have the X-ray and ask whether a referral is required. If you have symptoms, book a consultation so a clinician can examine you and decide whether an X-ray is suitable. Take any existing referral, medication list, and relevant previous reports to the appointment. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant or might be pregnant before imaging.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden chest pressure, fainting, or coughing up blood. Do not delay urgent assessment while trying to arrange a routine referral; emergency clinicians can decide which tests are needed.
