Do you need a referral for cervical cerclage?

Cervical cerclage, sometimes called a cervical stitch, places a suture around the cervix to help keep it closed during pregnancy. It may be discussed when a previous pregnancy, ultrasound finding, or examination suggests a risk of the cervix opening too early. An obstetrician reviews whether the procedure is suitable, when it should happen, and whether another approach is safer. A referral does not mean the procedure will definitely be performed; assessment comes first.

Contact your obstetrician, midwife, or pregnancy clinician promptly if cerclage has been mentioned. Share details of previous pregnancy losses, early births, cervical procedures, bleeding, fluid leakage, pain, and current medicines. The specialist may arrange an ultrasound or examination and explain anaesthesia, recovery, activity advice, and follow-up. Keep the referral appointment even if you feel well, because cervical changes can occur without obvious symptoms. Ask how to reach the maternity unit outside clinic hours.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for vaginal bleeding, watery fluid leaking, regular cramps or contractions, pelvic pressure, fever, severe lower abdominal pain, or a sudden change in pregnancy symptoms. If you have already had a cerclage, urgent review is especially important for painful contractions, suspected waters breaking, or heavy bleeding. Do not wait for a routine referral when these symptoms occur.

Ask what prompted the referral, which type of cerclage is being considered, when assessment should occur, and what symptoms mean you should go straight to maternity care. Ask how the stitch would affect examinations, travel, activity, and delivery planning.
