Do you need a referral for breast biopsy?

A biopsy removes a small sample of breast tissue or cells so a laboratory can examine it. It may be recommended after a breast examination or imaging finding that needs a clearer diagnosis. A breast lump can have many causes, and needing a biopsy does not by itself establish cancer.

The clinician arranging the biopsy will choose the technique, such as a core needle biopsy or fine needle aspiration, based on the area being assessed and the available imaging.

Ask the clinician who found the breast change whether a referral is needed and which records should accompany it. The imaging report and images, examination notes, medication list, allergies, and details of blood-thinning medicines may be relevant.

When booking, ask whether the biopsy is guided by ultrasound or another form of imaging, whether local anaesthetic is used, and how results will be shared. Follow the service’s instructions about medicines and clothing.

Arrange prompt clinical assessment for a new breast lump, a change that persists, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a breast that becomes hot and rapidly swollen. Seek urgent care if you also feel faint, have severe pain, or have a high fever.

Ask what prompted the biopsy, which type is planned, how to prepare, when results are expected, and whom to contact if bleeding, increasing pain, redness, or fever develops afterward.
