Do you need a referral for breast abscess drainage?

A breast abscess is a collection of infected fluid. A clinician may examine the breast and use ultrasound to check whether a drainable collection is present. Drainage can involve a needle or a small opening, and antibiotics may also be considered.

The service performing the procedure may be breast surgery, radiology, or another clinician trained in image-guided drainage. The route depends on the clinic, the examination findings, and how quickly assessment is needed.

Call a primary-care clinician, breast clinic, or hospital service and describe the painful area, redness, swelling, fever, and any discharge. Ask whether you can be assessed directly or need a referral letter. Bring your medication list and mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, or previous breast procedures.

Do not squeeze or puncture the swelling yourself. Until assessed, wear a supportive bra and use only pain relief that is suitable for you and taken as directed.

Seek urgent medical assessment for fever with a hot, red, painful breast, rapidly increasing swelling, feeling faint, confusion, or feeling suddenly very unwell. Prompt care matters because a breast infection can worsen and may need drainage or medication.

Ask whether imaging is needed, who will perform drainage, what pain relief or anaesthetic is planned, whether a sample will be tested, and how the wound should be cared for afterward.
