Do you need a referral for blood transfusion support?

If you are receiving cancer treatment, your oncology or haematology team can usually arrange this support within your care plan. A new patient may need referral to the service responsible for identifying why blood counts are low and whether red cells, platelets, or another approach is suitable.

A transfusion is not booked from a symptom alone. The clinical team considers your blood results, symptoms, active bleeding, treatment plan, medical history, and previous transfusion reactions. It also performs compatibility checks before compatible blood components are issued.

Red-cell support and platelet support serve different needs. The prescriber explains which component is proposed, why it may help, what alternatives apply, and how you will be monitored during administration.

Call the oncology or haematology contact listed in your treatment information if you develop new fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, unusual bruising, or bleeding. Give them the symptom, when it began, whether it is worsening, and when your latest treatment and blood test occurred. They can decide whether you need assessment, repeat testing, or transfusion support.

Bring identification and your current medicine list to the transfusion visit. Tell staff about allergies, pregnancy, prior reactions, or special blood requirements. Keep taking medicines as directed unless the prescribing team changes the plan.

Seek emergency help for severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, or blood in vomit. During a transfusion, immediately report chills, fever, itching, rash, back or chest pain, breathing difficulty, or feeling suddenly unwell so staff can stop and assess the infusion if needed. After leaving, follow the service's instructions for delayed symptoms.

Ask which blood component is being considered, what clinical problem it addresses, and what monitoring will occur. Clarify how long to expect at the facility, what reactions to report, whether follow-up blood tests are planned, and which number to call if symptoms return after discharge.
