Do you need a referral for biomechanical assessment?

Short answer
You may not need a referral for biomechanical assessment, but the clinic can set its own booking requirements.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
You may not need a referral for biomechanical assessment, but the clinic can set its own booking requirements. Physiotherapists and podiatrists may perform this assessment, so ask the service whether you can book directly or need a doctor’s note.
What is assessed
The clinician observes how you stand, walk, balance, and move through relevant joints. They may review footwear, training or work demands, pain triggers, muscle control, and the way the feet, knees, hips, or spine contribute to movement. The findings can guide exercise, footwear advice, orthotics, or referral for another assessment; they do not by themselves establish every possible cause of pain.
How to arrange the visit
Call the clinic and explain the body area, your main activity, and whether the assessment follows an injury or persistent pain. Ask what clothing and footwear to bring and whether you should bring previous reports. Wear comfortable clothes that allow the clinician to see movement. Write down when symptoms appear and what makes them better or worse. A referral may be useful when another clinician needs to share a diagnosis or coordinate care.
When assessment should not be your first step
Seek prompt medical care for a recent major injury with an obvious deformity, inability to bear weight, severe swelling, or a cold, pale, or numb limb. New weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly spreading numbness also needs urgent assessment. A routine movement screen is not a substitute for evaluating these warning signs.
Questions to ask
Ask who is qualified to perform the assessment, whether a referral is required, and what the visit can answer. Clarify whether gait, footwear, running technique, or a particular joint will be examined. Ask how the findings will change your exercises and when another professional should review you.
