Do you need a referral for an antenatal care package?

Antenatal care follows your health and the pregnancy from early assessment through preparation for birth. A package may bring together consultations, blood tests, ultrasound appointments, screening discussions, and advice about labour, feeding, and recovery. The exact contents differ between providers, so the package name alone does not show which services are included.

A referral is more likely to be useful when you have a medical condition, a previous pregnancy complication, multiple pregnancy, or a finding that needs specialist review. Routine care can still begin while a referral is being arranged.

Contact the obstetric clinic or maternity provider and ask whether you can self-book, what information is needed, and which appointments are included. Have your estimated due date, previous pregnancy records, current medicines, and relevant medical conditions available. Ask how the provider coordinates scans, laboratory tests, and referrals when your needs change.

Do not wait for package registration if you have heavy vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leakage, fainting, severe headache with vision changes, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. Contact your maternity service or urgent-care pathway promptly, as these symptoms require assessment outside a routine appointment.

Ask which visits and tests are included, who provides care if a concern is found, how quickly specialist review can be arranged, and how to contact the team between appointments. Confirm the plan for labour, birth location, and postnatal follow-up.
