Do you need a referral for amniocentesis?

Amniocentesis uses a needle through the abdomen to collect a small sample of amniotic fluid, usually with ultrasound guidance. The sample can be tested for selected genetic or chromosomal conditions. A referral allows the specialist team to review your pregnancy history, scan findings, screening results, and what information the test could provide.

The consultation should include a discussion of alternatives, possible results, and what each result might mean for your care. The procedure is optional, and you should have time to ask questions before deciding.

Speak with your obstetrician, midwife, or pregnancy-care clinician and explain why you are considering amniocentesis. Ask whether they will send the referral, which specialist service will contact you, and whether any scan or screening information should accompany it. Tell the team about your blood group, medicines, bleeding history, and any pregnancy concerns.

Contact your maternity team promptly if you have vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, contractions, or significant abdominal pain during pregnancy. After amniocentesis, follow the instructions given by the procedure team and seek urgent advice for worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, or feeling unwell.

Ask what the test is intended to find, when it would be performed, how results are reported, and what choices follow each possible result. Confirm who to call if symptoms develop after the procedure.
