Do you need a referral for allergy testing?

Access rules vary between clinics and health systems. A general-practice clinician can document what happened, how soon symptoms appeared after exposure, what you ate or took, and whether symptoms affected breathing or circulation. Testing may involve a skin prick test or an allergy blood test, but a result must be interpreted alongside your history; a test alone does not prove that an exposure causes symptoms.

Book a clinical assessment and bring a list of suspected triggers, medicines, previous reactions and any photographs of a rash or swelling. Do not deliberately re-expose yourself to test a suspected food, medicine or sting. Ask whether testing can be arranged directly or whether an allergy-and-immunology referral is more appropriate, especially after a severe or unclear reaction.

Get emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, faintness, collapse, or symptoms involving more than one body system after a possible trigger. Do not wait for outpatient testing during an active severe reaction. A mild, local rash still deserves clinical advice if it keeps returning or is interfering with sleep or daily activities.
