Do you need a referral for abscess drainage?

The route depends on the abscess location, size, depth, pain, surrounding redness and your general health. A clinician may be able to drain a straightforward skin abscess in a suitable setting, while a deeper, recurrent or awkwardly placed abscess may need general-surgery input. Assessment also helps distinguish an abscess from an inflamed cyst or another lump.

Contact a general-practice clinic and describe where the swelling is, how quickly it developed, whether it is draining, and whether you have fever. Do not squeeze, cut or puncture it at home. Keep the area clean, cover any drainage with a clean dressing, and ask whether you should attend the clinic directly or obtain a referral for a procedure. Follow wound-care instructions after drainage.

Seek prompt medical care if redness is spreading, pain is rapidly worsening, you feel feverish or unwell, or the abscess is near the eye, nose, genitals or spine. Emergency help is appropriate for confusion, fainting, severe weakness or breathing difficulty. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or poor circulation should arrange assessment early.
