Do you need a referral for an abdominal ultrasound?

A referral gives the radiology team the clinical question, relevant symptoms, medicines, and previous results needed to choose and interpret the scan. It can also ensure that an ultrasound is the right test and that urgent symptoms are directed to appropriate care. Some centres accept self-booking for selected scans, while others require a request from a doctor. An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to view organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen.

Ask the imaging centre where you plan to attend whether a referral is required and what information must be included. If you have pain, jaundice, urinary symptoms, or ongoing digestive problems, start with a clinician who can examine you and arrange the appropriate test. Follow the centre's preparation instructions; these may include fasting or arriving with a comfortably full bladder, depending on the area being assessed. Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, fainting, a rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, or yellow skin with confusion. Do not delay urgent assessment while trying to arrange a routine ultrasound. A clinician may choose a different test or treatment based on the examination.
