Do periods just stop at menopause?

How the structures involved in Menopause differ from normal

Short answer

Periods often become irregular, lighter, heavier, or more widely spaced before they stop; menopause is reached after twelve months without a period, unless another explanation applies.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What changes around menopause

The transition to menopause can alter ovulation and hormone patterns. A cycle may arrive earlier or later, last for fewer or more days, or change in flow. Some people notice symptoms such as [Hot Flushes](/symptoms/hot-flushes/), [Night Sweats](/symptoms/night-sweats/), vaginal dryness, sleep disruption, or mood changes; others have few symptoms. Menopause itself is defined by the menstrual history, not by one particular feeling.

A missed period can also have other causes, including pregnancy, stress, weight change, thyroid problems, some medicines, or hormonal contraception. If periods stop unexpectedly, the explanation should be checked in the right context.

What to do

Keep a record of bleeding dates, flow changes, pain, and other symptoms. If pregnancy is possible, take an appropriate test. Arrange a routine appointment if cycles become difficult to manage, symptoms affect sleep or daily life, or you want to discuss treatment options. Vaginal dryness, reduced desire, and mood changes are treatable concerns worth mentioning rather than silently tolerating.

When bleeding needs review

Arrange medical assessment for very heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, new pelvic pain, or bleeding after menopause has been established. Seek urgent help for bleeding with severe pain, faintness, marked weakness, or breathlessness. A new sensation of pressure or a bulge may also need assessment for [Pelvic Organ Prolapse](/conditions/pelvic-organ-prolapse/).

Questions to ask

Ask whether your pattern fits perimenopause, whether pregnancy or another condition should be excluded, and whether you need an examination or tests. Discuss options for hot flushes, night sweats, sleep, vaginal symptoms, mood, and sexual wellbeing. Ask what bleeding changes should prompt an earlier review.
