Short answer

Dizziness in the first trimester can happen as pregnancy changes circulation, appetite, hydration and blood sugar, but severe or persistent symptoms need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common experience
Brief lightheadedness can occur when circulation adapts in early pregnancy.
Safety step
Sit or lie down immediately when you feel faint.
Arrange review
Recurring, severe or activity-limiting episodes deserve assessment.

What it may mean

Early pregnancy hormones can widen blood vessels, allowing blood pressure to fall briefly when you stand. Nausea, vomiting, missed meals, warm rooms and not drinking enough can add to lightheadedness. Anaemia or iron deficiency anaemia may also contribute, especially with unusual tiredness, breathlessness or a racing heartbeat. Spinning brought on by turning your head may point to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo rather than faintness.

Dizziness alone does not identify one cause. A clinician may ask when it begins, whether you feel faint or the room moves, and review blood pressure, hydration, medicines and blood tests.

What to do now

Sit or lie on your side as soon as you feel unsteady, and tell someone nearby. Rise slowly from bed, avoid standing still for long periods, keep cool, and take regular sips of fluid. Small, frequent meals or snacks can help if nausea makes eating difficult. Do not drive, climb or use machinery while dizzy. Arrange pregnancy care if episodes recur, interfere with eating or drinking, or do not settle with rest.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for fainting, chest pain, trouble breathing, a severe headache, new weakness, confusion, vision changes, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down. Contact your maternity team promptly if dizziness is worsening or comes with a fast or irregular heartbeat. In hot conditions, headache, heavy sweating, weakness or confusion can signal heat exhaustion and needs attention.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your blood pressure, blood count and iron status should be checked; whether nausea or a prescribed medicine could be contributing; and which fluids, foods and supplements are suitable for you.

Questions people ask

Can dizziness harm the pregnancy?

A short episode often settles with rest, but falling, fainting, dehydration or an untreated medical cause can be concerning, so recurrent symptoms should be discussed with your maternity clinician.

What should I do if I feel dizzy after standing?

Hold onto a stable surface, sit or lie on your side, breathe normally and rise only after the sensation has passed. Seek advice if it keeps happening.
