Dizziness in early pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Dizziness in early pregnancy can result from circulation changes, nausea, dehydration, or low blood sugar, but severe or persistent symptoms need maternity advice.

Why early pregnancy may cause dizziness
Hormonal changes can relax blood vessels and make you feel lightheaded, especially when standing quickly or remaining upright for a long time. Nausea, vomiting, heat, and not eating regularly can add to the sensation. You might feel faint, weak, or unsteady rather than feel the room spin. Anaemia, including Iron Deficiency Anaemia, can also present with dizziness and tiredness, so ongoing symptoms should be discussed with your pregnancy care team.
Ways to reduce the risk of falling
Move from lying to sitting and then standing slowly. Eat small, regular meals and keep fluids nearby; if nausea makes drinking difficult, take frequent small sips and ask for advice. Avoid overheating and long periods of standing. Sit or lie on your side as soon as warning symptoms begin, and ask someone to stay with you if you feel unsafe walking. Do not start iron or other supplements beyond your pregnancy plan without professional advice.
When to contact your maternity team
Get urgent help for fainting, vaginal bleeding, one-sided or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, severe headache, vision changes, chest pain, breathlessness, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Contact your maternity team promptly if vomiting prevents fluids, dizziness keeps returning, you have fallen, or symptoms do not settle with rest and fluids.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask whether your blood pressure, hydration, blood count, and blood sugar should be checked. Mention how far along you are, whether you have bleeding or pain, how often you vomit, what makes dizziness start, and any medicines or supplements you use.

Questions people ask

No. Circulation and appetite changes can cause it, but severe, repeated, or associated symptoms need assessment by your maternity team.
What can I drink if nausea makes dizziness worse?
Try frequent small sips of fluid and seek advice if you cannot keep fluids down or you are becoming weak or faint.
