Dizziness from allergies: what to know

Nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, and poor sleep can leave you feeling drained or foggy. Reduced drinking during a flare can contribute to dehydration. Some allergy medicines can make people drowsy or unsteady, so check the label and discuss concerns with a pharmacist or clinician. Dizziness that feels like spinning, particularly with head movement, may fit benign paroxysmal positional vertigo rather than an allergy. Other possibilities include anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia, atrial fibrillation, heat exhaustion, low blood sugar, or anxiety. Allergy symptoms do not rule these out.

Sit down when dizziness begins and avoid driving until you know how you respond. Drink regularly, rest, and reduce exposure to the suspected trigger where practical. Review every prescription, over-the-counter product, and sedating antihistamine with a pharmacist before changing treatment. Note whether dizziness began after a new medicine, follows standing, or occurs with congestion, wheeze, rash, palpitations, or spinning. Arrange medical advice if it continues after the allergy flare improves or repeatedly returns.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat; trouble breathing; widespread hives with faintness; collapse; confusion; or sudden one-sided weakness or speech difficulty. These symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction or another emergency. Get prompt advice for worsening dizziness, repeated vomiting, an irregular heartbeat, or difficulty walking, even when familiar allergy symptoms are present.

Ask whether a medicine, dehydration, congestion, or another condition could explain the dizziness. Bring the product names and doses, describe the allergy trigger and timing, and mention wheeze, swelling, rash, hearing change, palpitations, missed meals, or recent heat exposure.
