What should you know about distraction hearing test?

During a distraction check, a tester makes a sound from the side while the person is focused elsewhere and observes whether they respond. It can provide an early indication that sound is being noticed, particularly in young children, but a response can vary with attention, tiredness, development, and the loudness or direction of the sound. It cannot establish the type or degree of hearing loss, or confirm that each ear hears equally.

If responses are inconsistent, speech development is delayed, or hearing seems reduced, arrange a formal Hearing Test. Audiometry or age-appropriate testing can examine each ear more systematically. Mention recent colds, ear infections, noise exposure, and medicines to the clinician. Earwax Buildup can temporarily reduce hearing and may be checked before interpreting results. Arrange prompt assessment for sudden hearing loss, hearing loss after a head injury, severe ear pain, drainage, or new dizziness.
