How to treat discoid eczema

Discoid, or nummular, eczema causes itchy, dry, coin-shaped patches. They may begin as small irritated spots and become scaly or crusted. Dry air, skin injury, harsh cleansers, and a weakened skin barrier can make flare-ups more likely. The appearance can overlap with fungal infection, so a clinician may examine the patch before choosing treatment.

Apply a fragrance-free emollient generously and often, particularly after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. Keep showers lukewarm and brief, use a mild cleanser only where needed, and pat rather than rub. Avoid scratching, wool against the patch, fragranced products, and picking at scale or crust. A clinician may prescribe an anti-inflammatory cream such as a topical corticosteroid; use it on the affected skin exactly as directed. A cool compress can ease itch, while covering the area with a soft dressing may reduce night-time scratching.

Arrange a medical assessment if patches are spreading, repeatedly returning, or not settling with careful moisturising. Seek prompt care if the skin becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, rapidly more red, or produces pus, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. These changes can signal infection or a different diagnosis that needs another treatment.
