Discharge and spotting after your period

Discharge and spotting after a period can reflect normal cycle changes, irritation, infection, or a condition that needs medical assessment. Note the colour, smell, amount, timing, and any pain or fever.

Clear or white discharge without a strong smell may change around ovulation. Pink or brown staining can be older blood, while bleeding after sex may come from irritation of the cervix or vagina. Unusual smell, itching, burning, pelvic pain, or pain during sex can occur with an infection such as Chlamydia.

Spotting between periods is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Cervical Dysplasia, Cervical Cancer, Endometrial Polyps, Uterine Fibroids, and Womb Cancer are among the conditions a clinician may consider, especially when bleeding keeps returning or occurs after sex. A bleeding pattern does not establish which condition is present.

Keep a brief record of when spotting starts, how long it lasts, and whether discharge changes. Avoid scented washes and do not douche. If pregnancy is possible, mention that when arranging care. A clinician may ask about contraception, medicines, recent sex, cervical screening, and infection symptoms, then decide whether an examination or tests are appropriate.

Use a pad if you need to monitor bleeding. Do not stop prescribed contraception or other medicine without advice; some medicines and hormonal methods can alter bleeding patterns.

Arrange a medical review if spotting is new, recurrent, follows sex, comes with unusual discharge, or does not settle. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked weakness, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy.

Could the discharge or spotting relate to an infection, contraception, pregnancy, or cervical or uterine changes? Which examination or test would clarify the cause? What symptoms should prompt urgent help?
