Smooth muscle works automatically inside hollow organs and blood vessels. Medicines described as direct smooth muscle relaxants may reduce contraction in a specific organ by acting on the muscle or its chemical signaling. Their uses depend on the medicine and may include selected abdominal, urinary, or vascular symptoms. They are not a general treatment for a tight back, a pulled hamstring, or every kind of cramp.

A back muscle spasm involves skeletal muscle, while a cramp can occur in several settings. Similar words do not mean the same medicine is suitable. The symptom’s location, timing, associated signs, and medical history guide the choice.
