When to get the diphtheria vaccine

Diphtheria vaccination is given through routine childhood immunisation, with boosters or catch-up doses decided from age and records. Because it is usually part of a combination vaccine, the appointment may protect against several infections at once.

A clinician checks the person’s age, previous doses, health needs and local programme before recommending a date. If a dose was delayed, the next step can often be arranged without repeating every earlier dose. Adults with uncertain records should not guess their status; a vaccination service can assess the safest way to complete protection. Booster timing may also matter for travel, healthcare work or contact with vulnerable people.

Take the immunisation record to the appointment and mention pregnancy, immune problems, severe allergies or a previous serious vaccine reaction.
