Diphtheria throat treatment: what to know

Diphtheria can cause a thick coating in the throat and release a toxin that harms nearby tissue or affects other organs. A clinician may examine the throat, ask about vaccination and contact history, and arrange a swab or other tests. Treatment can begin when suspicion is high, because waiting for every result may allow toxin-related injury to progress. Antibiotics help clear the bacteria and reduce spread; antitoxin may be considered by specialist teams.

Call a healthcare service before travelling if possible and describe the throat coating, fever, swallowing difficulty and any known exposure. Follow instructions about wearing a mask, avoiding close contact and not sharing cups or utensils. Do not scrape the coating away. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and tell the team about allergies and vaccination history. A sore throat has many causes, so do not self-diagnose from symptoms alone.

Seek emergency help for noisy or difficult breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, severe neck swelling, confusion, fainting or rapidly worsening weakness. These signs can indicate an obstructed airway or serious toxin effects. Anyone with suspected diphtheria should be assessed promptly even when symptoms seem limited to the throat.
