How long does diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccination last?

The combined vaccine covers three infections with different routes and consequences. A completed primary course establishes protection, but immunity can reduce with time and schedules include boosters for that reason. There is no single expiry date that applies to every person. The relevant interval depends on the vaccine used, earlier doses, age, pregnancy, medical conditions and whether travel or a wound creates a specific concern.

Polio vaccination is especially relevant when travelling to places where poliovirus may circulate. Tetanus risk is linked to contaminated wounds, while diphtheria spreads between people. Vaccination lowers risk but does not replace advice about wound care or symptoms.

Ask a clinic or immunisation service to review your written record. If documentation is missing, the team can decide whether a booster or catch-up course is appropriate. Tell them about planned travel, a deep or dirty wound, pregnancy, immune suppression and any serious prior vaccine reaction.

After an injection, keep the arm moving gently and follow the vaccinator's instructions. Mild tenderness, fatigue or a brief temperature can happen. Routine childhood timing is explained in Childhood Immunisation.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, fainting, widespread hives or sudden severe illness after vaccination. Arrange prompt medical review for a wound that is deep, contaminated, increasingly painful or difficult to clean, especially when vaccination history is uncertain.
