What should you know about the diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and hepatitis B vaccine?

Hepatitis B can spread through infected blood or body fluids and may cause no early symptoms. When symptoms occur, fatigue, dark urine, nausea or yellowing of the skin can be clues, although other conditions can cause them too. Vaccination prevents infection; it does not clear an established hepatitis B infection. A clinician may use blood tests and, when needed, liver function tests to assess illness.

Take the vaccination record to the appointment and mention previous reactions, immune conditions, pregnancy, medicines and possible blood or body-fluid exposure. Ask whether separate or combined products are appropriate. If exposure may have occurred, seek medical advice promptly because vaccination decisions can depend on the timing and circumstances.

Arrange prompt medical review for yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, severe fatigue, confusion, persistent vomiting or significant abdominal swelling. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty or facial swelling after vaccination, or for a serious blood exposure or needle injury.
