What should you know about a diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis booster?

Protection can change over time, and some people have missed an earlier dose or cannot confirm their history. A booster may be considered after a wound, during pregnancy, before travel, or as part of routine age-based care. It does not treat an active infection or replace assessment of a serious cough or throat problem.

Bring any paper or electronic immunisation record and mention previous vaccine reactions, allergies, medicines, pregnancy and immune conditions. Ask whether the dose can be given alongside another vaccine. After vaccination, remain at the clinic for the observation period advised by the vaccinator and keep the next-dose plan.

Contact urgent services for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, fainting that does not settle, or widespread hives after vaccination. For a wound, seek prompt care if it is deep, contaminated, badly crushed, or followed by increasing redness, fever or muscle stiffness.
