What should you know about diphtheria pertussis vaccine?

Short answer

The diphtheria pertussis vaccine trains immune protection against diphtheria and pertussis, with doses planned by age and risk.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this combination vaccine does

Combination vaccines reduce the number of injections while covering more than one infection. Diphtheria can produce a toxin and airway membrane; pertussis can cause prolonged, forceful coughing. Immunisation lowers the chance of severe illness and helps reduce spread to babies and other vulnerable people. Protection can change over time, so a child or adult may need scheduled doses or boosters.

Mild soreness, redness, tiredness, or a short-lived fever can occur after vaccination. Tell the vaccinator about previous serious reactions, immune conditions, pregnancy, or current illness so the schedule can be checked safely.

Planning vaccination

Bring the person’s immunisation record to the appointment and ask which dose is due. If a dose was delayed, a clinician can usually review the record and plan catch-up rather than restarting without advice. See Childhood Immunisation for routine programme context. Vaccination does not treat an active infection; suspected diphtheria needs urgent clinical assessment and may require Antibiotic Treatment.

When to get help after a dose

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, collapse, or widespread hives soon after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a persistent high fever, unusual drowsiness, or a reaction that is worsening rather than settling.

Questions to ask

Ask which formulation is recommended, whether a catch-up dose or booster is due, what to expect afterward, and how vaccination should be planned for pregnancy or close contact with a young baby.

Questions people ask

Can this vaccine cause diphtheria or pertussis?

No. Vaccines do not cause these infections; they present selected immune triggers to build protection.

What if an immunisation record is missing?

Tell the clinician. They can review available records and recommend a safe schedule based on the person’s circumstances.
