Dioralyte for diarrhoea: what to know

Dioralyte is an oral rehydration solution. Its balance of fluid and salts helps the gut absorb water when loose stools are causing losses. Diarrhoea may occur with Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, Giardiasis, Food Intolerance, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac Disease, Crohn's Disease, or Hyperthyroidism. The drink supports hydration while the reason for the diarrhoea is considered.

Mix the sachet exactly as directed with the stated amount of clean water; do not make it stronger or weaker. Take small, frequent sips, especially after a loose stool. Continue suitable foods when able and avoid alcohol. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with tiny sips. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about use in a child, older adult, pregnancy, kidney disease, or when other medicines are involved.

Seek urgent care for blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice when diarrhoea persists, repeatedly returns, follows travel, or affects someone vulnerable to dehydration. A clinician may need to assess the cause rather than relying on rehydration alone.
