What should you know about dimpling on side of breast?

The outer breast can show creases from posture, bra pressure, weight change, or the way breast tissue rests against the chest wall. A previous injury or operation can leave a scar that tethers skin. Inflammation, a cyst, or another lump may also change the contour. A side-of-breast dimple is a common presentation of breast cancer, but the sign does not tell you that cancer is present; examination is needed to distinguish causes.

Check whether the indentation changes when you lift an arm or alter position. Record its exact location and whether you feel a firm area beneath it, without repeatedly squeezing or rubbing the skin.

Arrange an appointment for a new, persistent, or unexplained contour change. Wear clothing that does not press the area and avoid applying irritating products before the visit.
