What should you know about digital video otoscope?

The clinician can inspect the skin of the ear canal, earwax, drainage, redness, swelling and the appearance of the eardrum. The live image may make it easier to explain what is being seen and to compare ears. It does not replace the clinical history or hearing assessment, and a clear image does not by itself identify every cause of ear pain or reduced hearing.

Usually, no special preparation is needed. Tell the clinician about pain, discharge, recent ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or a history of discomfort during ear examinations. Sit still while the tip is placed gently at the ear opening; avoid inserting cotton buds or other objects beforehand. A clinician may recommend wax treatment or another assessment if wax blocks the view.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or pus from the ear, marked dizziness, or swelling behind the ear. Seek urgent help if ear symptoms follow a significant head injury or occur with facial weakness, confusion or a severe headache. Children with fever, persistent crying, or trouble responding to sound should be assessed through a child health consultation.

Ask what the image shows, whether wax is affecting the examination, whether your eardrum moves normally, and whether you need a hearing test or follow-up GP consultation.
