What should you know about digital otoscope for iPhone?

The camera and light may help you view the outer ear and part of the canal on a phone screen. Images can be difficult to interpret because wax, reflections, narrow canals and poor positioning alter what you see. A picture cannot reliably confirm an ear infection, a perforated eardrum or the cause of pain. Never assume a normal-looking image rules out a problem, particularly in a young child.

Follow the device instructions and clean the attachment as directed. Keep the tip at the entrance unless a trained clinician has shown you how to use it safely; never force it past resistance or use it to remove wax. Do not share an attachment without proper cleaning. Save an image only with the person's permission, and avoid delaying assessment while trying to obtain a clearer view.

Arrange a GP consultation for ear pain, reduced hearing, discharge, persistent blockage, fever or symptoms after swimming or a blow to the ear. A child who is distressed, pulling at the ear or not responding normally should be assessed rather than examined repeatedly at home. Urgent care is needed for severe pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or fluid after injury, facial weakness or swelling behind the ear.
