Differin for keratosis pilaris: what to know

Keratosis pilaris, sometimes called chicken skin, forms when keratin and dead skin cells collect around hair follicles. Adapalene can encourage more orderly shedding inside the follicle, so rough plugs may feel less prominent over time. It does not remove the underlying tendency, and redness or texture can return when treatment stops. Burning, dryness, peeling, or stinging are possible, especially on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks.

A clinician can confirm that the bumps fit keratosis pilaris before you start. Apply a thin layer to clean, completely dry skin as directed, keeping it away from the eyes, lips, nostrils, and broken skin. Start with less frequent applications if your clinician agrees, use a bland moisturiser, and avoid scrubbing or layering several irritating products. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas because irritated skin can be more sensitive to sunlight. Emollient therapy may be a gentler foundation; topical retinoids are another treatment category to discuss.

Stop and contact a clinician if swelling, blistering, severe pain, or a spreading rash develops. Arrange an assessment when bumps ooze, crust, become markedly tender, or do not resemble your usual rough follicular pattern. Ask specifically about use during pregnancy or while trying to conceive, and mention eczema, very sensitive skin, or other retinoids.
