What should you know about different types of sore throats?

Short answer
Different sore throats can reflect viral infection, bacterial infection, allergy, reflux or local inflammation, so the accompanying pattern matters.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible sources
- Infection, allergy, reflux and irritation can all hurt the throat.
- Key clue
- Breathing or swallowing difficulty changes the urgency.
Recognising common patterns
A sore throat with a runny nose, cough or hoarse voice often occurs with a Common Cold or Influenza; COVID-19 can also cause throat symptoms. Fever, swollen neck glands and painful swallowing may occur with Strep Throat or Tonsillitis. Glandular Fever can bring marked tiredness and swollen glands. Allergic Rhinitis may cause throat irritation from mucus drainage, while Acid Reflux can cause burning or a recurring morning symptom. These patterns overlap, so symptoms cannot confirm a cause alone.
Comfort and assessment
Drink fluids, rest your voice, choose soft foods and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. A pharmacist can discuss suitable pain relief based on your age, medicines and health conditions. Do not start leftover antibiotics: they do not treat viral illness and may cause harm. Arrange an assessment if symptoms persist, recur often, or include fever and difficulty swallowing; testing may be considered when strep infection is suspected.
Red flags
Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, neck swelling, dehydration, confusion or rapidly worsening illness. Seek prompt advice for a high fever, a spreading rash, or symptoms in someone with reduced immunity. A sore throat’s cause should be assessed from its red flags and overall pattern, not from frequency alone.
Questions for your doctor
What cause best fits my symptoms? Do I need a throat test? Could reflux or allergies be contributing? Which warning signs should prompt urgent care? How should I manage pain safely?

Questions people ask
Does every sore throat need antibiotics?
No. Many sore throats are viral or irritative; antibiotics are used only when a clinician finds a bacterial reason.
When is a sore throat an emergency?
Breathing difficulty, inability to swallow liquids, drooling or rapidly increasing swelling require urgent help.
