Short answer

Rheumatoid arthritis can vary by age of onset, antibody pattern, affected joints and whether inflammation extends beyond the joints.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Hands, wrists and feet may be involved
Possible test finding
Rheumatoid factor or anti-CCP antibodies
Main concern
Ongoing inflammation can limit joint function

What the different patterns mean

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory autoimmune condition in which the immune system targets the lining of joints. Many people notice pain, swelling and stiffness in matching joints, often involving the hands, wrists or feet. Morning joint stiffness may last longer than the brief stiffness caused by inactivity.

Some people develop rheumatoid arthritis in adulthood, while others develop it earlier or later in life. Blood tests may show rheumatoid factor or anti-CCP antibodies, but results do not alone confirm or exclude the condition. Seronegative disease has rheumatoid arthritis features without those antibodies. Symptoms can also vary from mainly joint inflammation to problems affecting skin, eyes, lungs or general energy.

Finger stiffness, hand swelling and joint swelling can occur in rheumatoid arthritis, but these symptoms also have other causes. A clinician combines the history, examination, blood tests and sometimes imaging.

Steps after symptoms begin

Arrange assessment for persistent swelling, recurring pain, or stiffness that limits hand use or walking. Early treatment can reduce inflammation and protect movement, so keep a record of which joints are affected, how long morning stiffness lasts, and whether symptoms come in flares.

Treatment may include disease-modifying medicines, anti-inflammatory medication, exercise, joint protection and rehabilitation. Do not change prescribed medicine without discussing risks and monitoring with your clinician. Gentle movement, pacing and a balanced activity plan can help preserve function while inflammation is being treated.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for a hot swollen joint with fever, sudden severe weakness, chest pain, new breathing difficulty, sudden vision change or a rapidly worsening general condition. Request a timely appointment for new persistent joint swelling, prolonged morning stiffness or difficulty opening jars, dressing or walking.

Questions to ask

Ask which tests are needed, whether the pattern suggests rheumatoid arthritis or another inflammatory arthritis, and what treatment goal will be monitored. Ask about medicine side effects, vaccinations, safe exercise, hand therapy and symptoms outside the joints that should be reported.

Questions people ask

Can rheumatoid arthritis affect only the hands?

It can begin in the hands, but rheumatoid arthritis may involve other joints and sometimes tissues beyond the joints.

Does a negative blood test rule it out?

No. Some people have rheumatoid arthritis without the antibodies measured by common blood tests, so symptoms and examination still matter.
