Different types of postpartum depression

Short answer
Postpartum depression can appear as persistent sadness, anxiety, irritability, loss of interest, detachment, or distressing thoughts after birth.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Can begin
- During pregnancy or after birth
- May involve
- Mood, anxiety, sleep, bonding, or frightening thoughts
How it can look
Some parents mainly notice a low or empty mood, tearfulness, guilt, or difficulty enjoying the baby. Others feel keyed up, overwhelmed, angry, unable to sleep even when the baby sleeps, or unusually worried about harm. Emotional numbness and difficulty bonding can also occur, and do not mean you are a bad parent.
Symptoms may begin during pregnancy or after delivery and can affect any parent. Baby blues tend to settle quickly; symptoms that persist, intensify, or interfere with eating, sleeping, caring, or daily functioning deserve assessment. Low mood after birth and reduced sexual interest may occur alongside the wider picture.
What may help
Tell someone you trust what has changed, and arrange an assessment with a GP, obstetric clinician, midwife, or mental-health professional. Perinatal mental-health support may include talking therapy, practical support, and medication when appropriate. Accept help with meals, rest, and baby care; small, regular contact with supportive people can reduce isolation.
When to seek care urgently
Seek urgent help now if you may harm yourself or the baby, feel unable to stay safe, hear or see things others do not, feel unusually confused, or have rapidly changing, extreme behaviour. Do not stay alone in that situation; contact local emergency services or go to an emergency department. For persistent or worsening symptoms without immediate danger, seek a prompt appointment.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms be postpartum depression, anxiety, or another post-birth condition? What support is available locally? Which treatments fit breastfeeding, sleep, and my medical history? What warning signs mean I should seek urgent help?

Questions people ask
Is postpartum depression only sadness?
No. Anxiety, anger, numbness, guilt, loss of interest, and intrusive or frightening thoughts can also be part of it.
Can a supportive parent still develop it?
Yes. Postpartum depression is a health condition and is not a measure of love, character, or parenting ability.
