Different Types of Ichthyosis

Inherited forms often begin in childhood and may run in a family. Ichthyosis vulgaris commonly causes fine scaling and may be more noticeable on the limbs. Other inherited forms can produce larger, darker scales or affect particular body regions. Acquired ichthyosis begins later and can occur alongside another illness or after a medicine, so the timing matters. Use short, lukewarm showers, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and pat the skin dry. Apply a rich moisturiser soon after washing and repeat when the skin feels tight. Regular [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) can soften scale and reduce cracking. Do not scrape scales aggressively; ask a dermatologist whether a scale-softening ingredient is suitable for your skin and age.

Arrange assessment for persistent scaling that began suddenly, is widespread, or is not helped by moisturising. Seek prompt care for painful cracks, bleeding, pus, fever, or signs of infection. Babies and children with extensive scaling, overheating, poor feeding, or reduced urination need timely medical review because a damaged skin barrier can affect temperature and fluid balance.

Ask which type is most consistent with the age of onset and distribution, whether family members should be assessed, which moisturiser ingredients are appropriate, and whether another condition or medicine could explain newly acquired scaling.
