Short answer

Different chemical peels vary by ingredient and depth: they loosen surface connections or affect deeper skin layers to address carefully selected concerns.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How peel types differ

A superficial peel is designed for the outermost skin and generally involves less recovery than a deeper peel. The ingredient, concentration, contact time, and the condition of the skin all affect the response. Glycolic Acid is one ingredient used in some peels and may help exfoliate the surface. A clinician may consider a peel for Acne, Comedonal Acne, Sun-Damaged Skin, Sun Spots, Melasma, or Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, but the same product is not suitable for every complexion or concern. Active irritation, infection, recent procedures, and some medicines can change the plan.

Preparing and caring for skin

Have the treatment performed by a qualified professional who can examine your skin and set a suitable depth. Share your history of cold sores, pigment changes, allergies, recent sun exposure, and all skin products or medicines. Follow the preparation plan, then use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and strict sun protection while the skin heals. Do not pick peeling skin or add exfoliants until advised. A series may be suggested, but timing should follow your skin’s response rather than a fixed promise.

When to seek care

Contact the treating clinician for severe or worsening pain, marked swelling, extensive blistering, pus, fever, or a reaction that extends beyond the treated area. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face and throat. New or worsening dark or light patches also deserve review so future treatment can be adjusted.

Questions for your doctor

Which depth and ingredient match my concern and skin tone? What should I stop before treatment? How long might visible peeling last? How will you reduce pigment-change risk? Which symptoms are outside the expected recovery?

Questions people ask

Is a deeper peel always better?

No. Depth should match the concern, skin condition, and acceptable recovery; greater intensity can bring different risks.

Can a peel treat dark marks?

Some peels may be considered for selected pigment concerns, but irritation can also worsen discoloration, so assessment matters.
