Difference between real and fake contractions

Braxton Hicks contractions are practice tightenings. They may feel uncomfortable, change with movement or rest, and stay unpredictable. True labour contractions tend to develop a regular rhythm, become harder to talk through, and continue despite changing position, resting, drinking fluids, or having a warm shower. Labour also causes progressive changes to the cervix, which cannot be confirmed by sensation alone.

Some people have strong discomfort before established labour, while others notice little pain. Timing and change over time are more useful than a single contraction.

Use a clock to record when each tightening starts and how long it lasts. Drink fluids, empty your bladder, rest, and change position if comfortable. Keep your maternity unit's contact details available and follow the individual plan you were given, because advice varies with pregnancy stage, previous births, and medical history.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for regular painful contractions, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, reduced fetal movement, severe constant abdominal pain, or contractions before the stage of pregnancy when labour is expected. Preterm labour needs prompt assessment even when contractions are not very painful. Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, collapse, or severe breathing difficulty.
