Short answer

There is no single diet for Crohn's disease; the safest plan matches your symptoms, disease activity, nutrition needs and clinician's advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why diet needs to be personal

Crohn's disease can affect different parts of the digestive tract, and foods tolerated during remission may feel different during a flare. Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating and reduced appetite can make eating difficult, while ongoing inflammation can increase nutritional needs. Food may aggravate symptoms without causing the underlying disease.

Restricting many foods can lead to inadequate energy, protein, vitamins or minerals. A food diary can reveal patterns, but it should not replace assessment of [Crohn's Disease](/conditions/crohns-disease/) activity.

Eating during changing symptoms

Eat regular, manageable meals and drink enough fluid, particularly when stools are loose. During a flare, your clinician or dietitian may suggest temporarily adjusting fibre texture or other foods, then broadening the diet as symptoms settle. Keep a record of foods, pain, stool changes, appetite and weight.

Do not stop prescribed treatment because a diet seems helpful. Arrange a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) if food restriction is growing, eating is painful, or you are struggling to maintain nutrition. A [Blood Test](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/blood-test/) may help assess anaemia, inflammation or nutritional concerns.

When to seek care

Contact your care team promptly for worsening diarrhoea, persistent abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, blood in stool, dehydration or inability to eat and drink. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain with a swollen abdomen, collapse or rapidly worsening illness.

Seek help if symptoms wake you repeatedly, your clothes become looser without trying, or food avoidance is affecting daily life. These changes can signal active disease or nutritional problems rather than a simple food sensitivity.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a flare, which foods should be adjusted temporarily, whether you need a dietitian, how to replace restricted nutrients, and when blood tests or review are needed.

Questions people ask

Should everyone with Crohn's disease avoid dairy or fibre?

No. Tolerance varies, and blanket avoidance can remove useful nutrients.

Can diet cure Crohn's disease?

Diet may support comfort and nutrition, but it does not replace medical treatment or monitoring.
