Diet for nickel allergy

A contact reaction often appears where jewellery, fasteners, tools or devices touch the skin. Some people with ongoing eczema-like symptoms may discuss nickel in food with a dermatologist, but a rash does not prove that food is responsible. Broad avoidance can reduce dietary variety and should not replace patch testing or evaluation for other forms of dermatitis.

First identify and reduce likely contact exposures, such as earrings, belt buckles or phone components, with professional advice about suitable alternatives. Do not begin a highly restrictive diet on your own. If a clinician recommends a food trial, keep a written record of meals, skin changes and exposures, follow the agreed period, and reintroduce foods only as directed. Treatment for an active flare may include prescribed topical corticosteroids.

Arrange review when a rash keeps returning, spreads beyond contact sites, cracks, oozes or interferes with sleep. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness or widespread blistering. A clinician can check for infection, confirm whether nickel is relevant and prevent an unnecessary diet from causing nutritional problems.
