What should you know about dichroic mirror flow cytometry?

They are internal optical components, not mirrors placed in or near your body. Their performance influences how clearly the instrument distinguishes fluorescent labels attached to cells.

During flow cytometry, cells pass individually through laser light. Fluorescent labels on selected cell features emit different colours. A dichroic mirror reflects some wavelength bands while allowing others to pass, directing each band towards the appropriate detector. Several mirrors and filters can work together to separate overlapping signals.

Software converts the detector signals into patterns that a laboratory specialist interprets alongside cell appearance, clinical details and other tests. The mirror itself neither diagnoses cancer nor determines treatment; it supports the measurement used in the overall assessment.

Follow the instructions for the sample being collected. Flow cytometry may use blood, bone marrow, lymph-node tissue or another fluid or tissue, so preparation and aftercare depend on the collection method rather than on the optical mirrors. Tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding before an invasive sampling procedure.

When the report is available, ask which cell markers were assessed, whether the sample was adequate and how the findings fit with your blood counts, microscopy, imaging or molecular tests. Keep the full report if another centre may need to review the case.

The optical analysis does not cause physical symptoms. After a blood draw or tissue procedure, contact the clinical team promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing redness or swelling, fever, worsening pain, fainting or breathing difficulty. Follow the discharge instructions from the sample procedure because they are tailored to the site and method used.
