What should you know about diastasis recti transverse abdominis?

How the structures involved in Diastasis Recti differ from normal

Short answer

The transverse abdominis can support pressure control in diastasis recti, but effective rehabilitation also includes breathing, movement coordination, and gradual strengthening.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The muscle’s role

The transverse abdominis wraps around the trunk beneath the more visible abdominal muscles. It contributes to trunk support and works with the diaphragm, pelvic floor, and other muscles as pressure changes. With diastasis recti, the goal is not to force the abdomen flat or isolate one muscle at all costs. A good assessment looks at whether you can gently engage the deep abdominal wall while breathing and moving without pain, breath-holding, or pronounced doming.

Training the deep abdominal wall

Begin in a comfortable position. Let the breath move freely, then gently narrow the lower abdomen as you exhale without pulling the ribs down forcefully or gripping the pelvis. Hold only as long as you can maintain relaxed breathing, release fully, and repeat according to professional guidance. Practise the same control during rolling, standing, and lifting before adding resistance. A physiotherapist can check technique and coordinate treatment with pelvic-floor symptoms; Postnatal Physiotherapy offers relevant reading.

When to seek care

Arrange an examination for ongoing abdominal or back pain, pelvic heaviness, urine leakage, or weakness that limits routine activity. Get urgent help for sudden intense pain, a hard tender bulge, vomiting, faintness, fever, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling.

Questions for an assessment

Ask how to identify a gentle transverse-abdominis contraction, which signs show excessive pressure, how pelvic-floor coordination fits your plan, and how to progress from isolated practice to lifting and exercise.

Questions people ask

Can I strengthen this muscle by holding my breath?

Breath-holding can increase pressure and is not the usual goal. Practise gentle activation while maintaining a natural breath.

Is the transverse abdominis the only muscle that matters?

No. Abdominal, back, breathing, and pelvic-floor muscles need to coordinate for practical support.
