Short answer

A diastasis recti finger test is a gentle self-check for midline separation, but it cannot measure function or confirm the cause of a bulge.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it checks
A rough feel of the abdominal midline
What it cannot show
Strength, pressure control, or the cause of every bulge

How the finger check is done

Lie on your back with knees bent and relax your abdomen. Place your fingertips across the midline near the navel, then gently lift your head or shoulders only enough to feel the abdominal wall engage. Move the check above and below the navel, noticing the firmness and tension of the tissue rather than pressing deeply. A soft space or ridge can occur with abdominal separation, but the result depends on your position, pressure, muscle effort, body shape, and recovery stage. The check cannot show how well you brace, breathe, lift, or manage pressure during daily activities.

Use the result carefully

Stop if the check causes pain, dizziness, breath-holding, or pelvic pressure. Do not keep repeating it to search for a particular finger count. Record what you notice alongside symptoms such as doming, heaviness, leaking urine, or difficulty rolling in bed. A clinician or Postnatal Physiotherapy practitioner can assess movement and build a graded plan. Gentle exhalation and coordinated abdominal activity are usually more useful goals than trying to close a space by force.

When to seek care

Book an assessment when weakness, pain, a persistent bulge, or pelvic symptoms interfere with exercise, lifting, caring for a baby, or work. Seek urgent care for severe sudden pain, vomiting, fever, faintness, or a firm tender bulge that cannot be eased. A finger check cannot safely rule out a hernia or another abdominal condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your self-check was performed appropriately, whether the findings fit diastasis recti, and what functional tests you need. Ask which exercises are suitable now, how to manage pressure during lifting, and when to arrange follow-up.

Questions people ask

How many fingers should fit in the gap?

A finger count alone is not a reliable target because tissue tension and functional control also matter.

Can I do the check after pregnancy?

You can use a gentle check if it is comfortable, but an examination is more useful when symptoms persist or affect movement.
