Diarrhoea with mucus

The bowel naturally produces mucus to protect its lining, and a small amount may be more visible during diarrhoea. Infection such as Gastroenteritis or Food Poisoning can irritate the bowel and increase mucus. Recurrent mucus with cramps and urgency can occur with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Ongoing diarrhoea with pain, blood, fever, or weight loss may require assessment for inflammation, including Crohn's Disease. Food Intolerance and Coeliac Disease can also cause persistent bowel changes, but mucus alone does not identify a condition.

Drink frequently and use oral rehydration solution if fluid loss is significant. Eat small meals that you tolerate, and record stool appearance, pain, urgency, fever, recent travel, medicines, and food exposures. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Do not take anti-diarrhoeal medicine without advice if mucus is accompanied by blood, fever, or severe abdominal pain.

Seek urgent help for blood or black stools, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange a medical review if mucus continues, diarrhoea keeps returning, symptoms wake you at night, or you develop fever, weight loss, or weakness. Seek advice sooner for a child, an older adult, pregnancy, or a long-term illness.
