Diarrhoea in the morning: what to know

Short answer
Morning diarrhoea can reflect an active bowel reflex, food or medicines, but repeated episodes deserve assessment for an underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why mornings can trigger symptoms
The bowel naturally becomes more active after waking and eating, so stool urgency may be more noticeable in the morning. Coffee, a large breakfast, stress, alcohol from the previous evening, artificial sweeteners, or a food intolerance can add to this effect. A recent infection may also leave the bowel sensitive for a while.
Persistent morning diarrhoea may occur with irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, hyperthyroidism or another condition. The pattern alone cannot identify the cause. Note pain, bloating, weight change, fever, nighttime stools, blood, recent antibiotics and travel.
Useful next steps
Keep a short diary of wake-up time, meals, drinks, medicines, stool appearance, urgency and associated symptoms. Maintain fluids, eat regular simple meals, and reduce only the triggers that clearly worsen symptoms rather than removing many foods at once. Wash hands carefully if an infection is possible.
Arrange a medical review if the pattern continues, interrupts work or sleep, or is changing. A clinician may ask about diet, medicines and family history before deciding whether examination or stool and blood tests are useful.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, dehydration, repeated vomiting, black stool or visible blood. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, unexplained weight loss, diarrhoea that wakes you repeatedly, or a clear change in bowel habit that does not settle. Do not let a familiar morning pattern obscure new warning signs.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your medicines, coffee, diet or stress could contribute, whether testing for coeliac disease or thyroid problems is appropriate, and which changes should be reported quickly.

Questions people ask

No. Irritable bowel syndrome is one possibility among several; the pattern and accompanying symptoms guide assessment.
