Diarrhoea and homeopathic medicine: what to know

Diarrhoea can result from infection, food intolerance, medicines, or conditions such as coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. A homeopathic product does not establish which cause is present. Some products may contain active ingredients, alcohol, allergens, or contaminants, and labelling can vary. Tell a clinician or pharmacist everything you take, including complementary products, so interactions and delays in care can be considered.

Prioritise frequent fluids and oral rehydration solution when needed, with small meals as tolerated. Check any homeopathic product with a qualified pharmacist before use, especially for a child, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or a long-term condition. Do not use it instead of prescribed treatment or testing. Keep a note of the product name, ingredients, dose, and when symptoms began.

Get urgent help for blood or black stools, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, inability to drink, or very little urine. Arrange medical review for diarrhoea that continues beyond a few days, keeps returning, or comes with fever, weight loss, or nighttime symptoms. Extra caution is needed for infants, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity.
