Diarrhea and itchy skin: possible links

Frequent loose stools can irritate skin around the anus, while dehydration may make already dry skin feel itchier. A new food, medicine, or infection can also produce digestive symptoms and a rash. Itchy skin may be a presentation of conditions such as contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, hives, psoriasis, scabies, lichen planus, asteatotic eczema, or a skin yeast infection. The itch may be local or widespread, and its timing, visible rash, exposures, and bowel symptoms help distinguish these possibilities. Itchy skin does not by itself identify the cause of diarrhoea.

Drink fluids regularly, follow local medical advice about oral rehydration, and choose gentle foods if eating feels difficult. Wash irritated areas with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid fragranced products or hot showers. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Note when the diarrhoea and itch began, any new foods or medicines, travel, sick contacts, and whether the rash is raised, scaly, blistered, or limited to one area. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it with a clinician.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, severe abdominal pain, blood or black stool, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Get medical advice promptly for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, a dry mouth, or marked dizziness, or for a widespread rash with fever. Arrange review when symptoms persist, recur, or follow a new medicine or food.
