Diarrhea and Heat Stroke

Heat stroke occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature. Confusion, unusual behaviour, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, or difficulty staying awake are more concerning than diarrhea alone. Vomiting may prevent drinking, while diarrhea can add water and salt loss. A person with heat stroke may sweat heavily or have hot skin; sweating does not make the situation safe. Do not wait for a home temperature reading before acting.

Call emergency services and move the person to a cool place. Remove unnecessary clothing and cool the body rapidly with cold wet cloths, a fan, or cool water while help is coming. Stay with the person and place them on their side if they are vomiting or drowsy. Give nothing by mouth if they are confused, unconscious, or unable to swallow. Medical teams may provide monitoring and IV Fluid Therapy when oral replacement is unsafe or insufficient.

Seek emergency care now for confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness, severe agitation, or inability to drink. Treat these signs as urgent even if diarrhea seems mild and even if fever is absent. Prompt assessment is also needed for persistent vomiting, worsening weakness, or symptoms after prolonged heat exposure. Do not leave the person alone or allow them to drive themselves.
