How long can diarrhoea last after food poisoning?

Food poisoning irritates the digestive tract through germs or toxins. Diarrhoea may occur with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or fever, and the bowel can remain sensitive after the main illness has eased. The type of foodborne illness, the amount of fluid lost, and your general health affect recovery.

A continuing illness is not automatically a sign of a complication, but symptoms that intensify or fail to settle deserve assessment. Blood in stool, severe pain, and repeated vomiting change the level of concern.

Take frequent small sips of water and use oral rehydration therapy when diarrhoea or vomiting is causing substantial fluid loss. Resume light meals as tolerated; you do not need to fast. Wash hands with soap and water, clean contaminated surfaces, and avoid preparing food for other people while symptoms continue.

Avoid alcohol and be cautious with anti-diarrhoeal medicines. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether one is appropriate, especially if you have fever or blood in the stool. IV fluid therapy may be needed when drinking cannot replace losses.

Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, very little urine, severe dehydration, severe or localised abdominal pain, blood or black stool, repeated vomiting, or worsening fever. Contact a clinician if diarrhoea remains frequent, you cannot maintain fluids, or you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or living with a significant medical condition.

Ask whether your symptoms need stool testing, which rehydration option fits your situation, and whether any medicine should be stopped or changed. Mention the suspected food, when symptoms began, and whether anyone else became ill.
