What should you know about diaper rash with teething?

Teething can coincide with changes in feeding, stools, drooling and nappy routines, but a rash in the nappy area is still commonly driven by moisture, stool enzymes and friction. The timing alone cannot show that teething caused it. Look for where redness appears, whether folds are involved, whether there are surrounding spots, and whether the child has symptoms such as fever or seems unwell. Those details are more useful than the calendar connection.

Change nappies promptly, wash with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat dry. Apply a bland barrier layer and avoid fragranced wipes, talc, scrubbing and new creams while the skin is irritated. Keep the mouth and nappy-area care separate, and do not use a product intended for teething on the skin. Get medical advice if the rash spreads, becomes raw, blisters, bleeds, swells or develops pus, crusting or marked pain. Seek prompt care if the child has fever, reduced feeding, fewer wet nappies, unusual sleepiness or appears unwell. Do not dismiss these signs as teething. A rash that persists despite gentle cleaning and barrier care also warrants review.

Ask whether the stool pattern, new foods, medicines, wipes or creams could be contributing, and whether the rash involves the folds. Check which barrier product is suitable and what symptoms would mean the child should be seen again.
