What nappy rash means in children

The rash may appear as pink or red patches on the buttocks, lower abdomen, genitals, or upper thighs. Wetness softens the outer skin, while rubbing and frequent stool can increase irritation. Some children develop sensitivity to a product, or a yeast rash after the skin barrier has been disrupted. A rash in the creases, with spots beyond its edge, or one that keeps returning may need a clinician’s assessment.

Change nappies promptly and rinse the area with lukewarm water or use fragrance-free wipes. Pat dry and give the skin short periods without a nappy when practical. Apply a thin protective barrier, avoid talc and fragranced products, and choose a fit that does not rub. Do not scrub, use adult medicines, or apply steroid or antifungal products unless a clinician has recommended them for this child.

Arrange a review if the rash is severe, cracked, blistered, bleeding, spreading, or not improving after careful home care. Seek prompt advice for fever, pus, marked swelling, or pain during urination. Urgent care is appropriate when a child seems seriously unwell, is difficult to wake, or is drinking and urinating much less than usual.
