Diaper rash with broken skin: what to do

Raw areas may form when ongoing dampness and friction weaken the skin barrier. Once the surface is open, urine and stool can sting, and germs can enter more easily. Redness in the folds, satellite spots, blisters, crusting, or pus can suggest that simple irritation is not the only issue.

Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and change nappies promptly. Let the skin air briefly when possible. Apply a plain barrier to surrounding clean skin if your clinician agrees, using a gentle touch and avoiding vigorous wiping. Do not use talc, alcohol, fragrance, or leftover prescription creams.
